    The Astrology of King Charles

With the historic Coronation occurring on May 6th, this seems like this is the perfect time to get to know the chart of King Charles III. But first, what are some details about this ceremony that are steeped in tradition of Great Britain? This is Pomp and Circumstance at its finest.

King Charles acceded to the throne on September 8, 2022 upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The coronation of King Charles and his wife, Camilla, as King and Queen of the United Kingdom and their commonwealth realms, is scheduled for Saturday May 6, 2023 at Westminster Abbey. In addition to the ceremony, the coronation will also include public celebrations. On May 7, the Coronation Big Lunch will offer the public an opportunity to celebrate with street parties. The Coronation Concert will be held at Windsor Castle and will be broadcast on TV and streamed online. Some of the entertainers will include Sir Bryn Terfel, Andrea Bocelli, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie as well as many others.

Coronation is an English ritual which began in 943 AD with St. Dunston (Archbishop of Canterbury). This goes back to the Anglo-Saxons. The coronation is not merely a crowning. It is a blessing, a hollowing, an anointing and a consecrating. It is a religious ceremony setting the King apart into sovereignty. The definition of sovereign is “a political concept that refers to dominant power or supreme authority. In a Constitutional Monarchy, supreme power resides in the ‘sovereign,’ or the king. In modern democracies, sovereign power rests with the people and is exercised through representative bodies such as Congress or Parliament.”

There will be six different sections to the coronation.

    1. Recognition. The Archbishop of Canterbury presents the King to the assembled political establishment of the nation. He asks them four times to recognize their new sovereign – to which they answer, “God Save the King.”
    2. Oath. The King makes an oath to uphold the laws, customs and faith on which the Kingdom is built.
    3. Anointing. The King is anointed in 3 places with Holy Oil.
    4. Investitures. Imperial robes will be donned including a sword, orb, ring and two scepters. He will arrive dressed in a military uniform and will exit in an imperial robe.
    5. Crowning. The King will be crowned with St. Edward’s crown.
    6. Homage. The King moves from St. Edward’s chair to a throne set on steps to the west of it. The King is then lifted into the raised throne by the bishops and nobles who consented to his hallowing. This time the King “takes possession” of his Kingdom. Allegiance is then paid to the King.

Now let’s look at the chart of King Charles. His Sun is in passionate Scorpio with his rising sign in the royal sign of Leo and his Moon in stable Taurus. He has a dominant Grand Trine with his Taurus Moon at the apex. King Charles has a powerful and regal chart which is fitting for his position as King of England.

The red lines in a chart show the challenges and lifetime focus, while the blue lines always show the talents and gifts. The birth chart defines the purpose in life.

Starting with the red lines, let’s look at the Sun of King Charles in his 4th house of his family and heritage. That position of the Sun gives him a strong connection with his family. His Sun squares Pluto in his first house of himself. Pluto rising gives him a prominent personality. With Pluto connecting with his Sun, he must be big and important, even though Scorpios enjoy their privacy. That must be a challenge for him.

His strongest red lines are the vertical ones from his Taurus Moon at the top of the chart to his Mercury in Scorpio at the bottom of his chart. Typically, that is a quiet or private Mercury with a stilted and awkward communication style. It is compounded by being right next to the South Node, which is arguably the most difficult point in the entire chart. The North Node, joining his Moon up in his 9th house, is opposing his Mercury and South Node at the bottom of the chart.

The Nodes are two points that form a plane in space. Incidentally, when the Nodes align with the Sun and the Moon, it creates an Eclipse. Metaphysically, the Nodes describe our past life themes in the chart. The North Node explains our destiny, while the South points to our karma or unfinished business.

His Moon in Taurus and North Node are at the apex of his Grand Trine as well as being the main red line configuration of his chart. The Moon relates to family and Taurus is very stable and loyal. Since his Moon joins the North Node, it is his destiny that he is one of the leaders of his family. The red line challenge comes in to try to balance his need for Scorpio privacy while being one of the most visible and important monarchs in the world. He must have to escape the public eye often.

His last red line is from Jupiter in Sagittarius in his 5th house to Uranus in Gemini in his 11th house. Jupiter in Sag is very international and lightens up his Scorpio personality. He must have a sense of humor, even if it is subdued because of his position. The 5th house is also about his children and grandchildren, which obviously, are an important part of his life. Not only are they his children, but they are also his heirs to the throne to continue the Royal duties of the largest monarchy in the world.

In summary of his red lines: The lifetime challenge of King Charles is to be in the public eye as King and maintain the monarchy, while still protecting his privacy.

Now let’s get to know the beautiful Grand Trine in his chart. The three planets involved are his Moon, Saturn and Jupiter. King Charles has Saturn in his first house in the organized sign of Virgo, which helps him be a good manager. Jupiter brings some levity to the otherwise serious triangle. It is said that King Charles has a good sense of humor. He is also interested in plants, botany and ecology. The combination of those three planets offers a stable structure for his life so he can accomplish his Royal duties.

King Charles has two blue lines or trines from Uranus in his 11th house to his Mercury in Scorpio at the bottom of his chart. Uranus trine Mercury has a talent in producing creative ideas and implementing them. That angle gives him as open of a mind as is possible, given the restraints in his life. His last trine is from prominent Pluto in his first house to Mars in Sag in his 5th house. Pluto is power and Mars is action. This is often seen in military or government leaders.

In summary of his blue lines: King Charles has the organizational and leadership skills to be an effective sovereign.

To summarize his chart: King Charles is here to balance his private and public life, while leading his country and commonwealth as King.

In addition to getting to know the chart of King Charles, I had to look at the transits of his coronation. Obviously, they did not have an astrologer choose the date, since they chose a dicey day, to say the least. There is a Lunar Eclipse as well as a Mercury Retrograde. Neither one is good for this kind of an event, let alone happening at the same time. The Lunar Eclipse occurs on May 5th and the coronation is on May 6th. That is definitely close enough to affect the ceremony. Mercury is retrograde from April 21st through May 15th.

Mercury retrograde could cause confusion with travel and communications. The Eclipse can mark a tremendous change, but it can carry excess baggage with it. The British Monarchy has had its challenges lately. Prince Andrew got into trouble for spending time with Jeffrey Epstein. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have caused major conflict with Harry’s book, Spare. Meghan stirred things up in her interview with Oprah. Of course, the memory of Princess Diana will always hover over King Charles as well as Camilla. Not to mention the issue many people have with the Monarchy in general.

This chart has King Charles in the center and the transits of the Coronation around the outside. Looking at the top, we can see Mercury Retrograde as well as the Eclipse. Remember that when the Nodes align with the Sun and Moon, there is an Eclipse. This is a Lunar Eclipse since it’s on the Full Moon. Jupiter is also involved, just to make it bigger. The Eclipse lands on the apex of his Grand Trine, or his point of destiny in the world. It is also exactly his Nodal Return. That only occurs every 18.6 years and is a turning point in a person’s life.

The Eclipse would point to a time of major change in his life, although an Eclipse is often a sign of sudden challenge. Mercury Retrograde can cause problems with communications.

Moving on to Saturn in the 8th house of others’ money, who is opposing the birth Saturn of King Charles. Saturn oppose Saturn occurs once every 30 years and is usually a time of added responsibilities. Since they are both on the cusp of money houses, it means he got a big promotion. Ok, I guess becoming the King is a big move in his career.

There is one more important transit that is about to happen, too. Transiting Uranus in Taurus, up in the 10th house, is getting ready to oppose King Charles’ Sun in Scorpio. That will occur from August through September 2023 and again in May 2024. Uranus will bring sudden change to his life during those dates. It seems that will be something new and not just about him becoming King.

Of course, I must end this article with . . . God Save the King.
