The Moon’s Nodes are one of the most mysterious and meaningful parts of astrology. The North and South Nodes of the Moon are not planets. They are two opposing points in space where the Moon’s tilted orbit crosses the path of the Sun. The ecliptic is the path the Sun appears to follow across the sky from sunrise to sunset, and the planets also move along it.
The Sun and Moon meet each other at the nodes twice a year. The nodes are intersections where two paths cross in the sky. Therefore, there are two eclipse seasons each year. One eclipse season occurs on the North Node, and the other eclipse season lands on the South Node.
The North Node, also called the ascending node, is where the Moon crosses upward. The South Node, or the descending node, is where the Moon crosses downward. Their axis slowly rotates backward through the zodiac, completing a cycle every 18.6 years. This is called the Saros cycle. It governs similar eclipses, or eclipse families. The nodes are so important that they are the only points I include in my charts other than the planets. No asteroids for me. I like to keep it clean.
Fun fact: The Moon’s Nodes always move in a retrograde direction.
Eclipses occur when the Sun and Moon align with the Moon’s Nodes. I say, “Eclipses occur on the Ecliptic!” A new moon close to the nodal axis creates a solar eclipse. When a full moon happens close the moon’s nodes, it creates a lunar eclipse.
So this is the physical meaning of the nodes, but what do they mean metaphysically? Astrology uses the nodes to explain life lessons, habit patterns and personal growth. Some astrologers call them hints into our past lives.
The North Node shows growth and evolution in a person’s chart. It talks about our natural talents and gifts.
On the other hand, the South Node reveals old patterns and repeated karmic tendencies. I call the South Node “what needs to be fixed.”
A straightforward way to put it is this: the South Node is your lazy comfort zone, and the North Node is your challenging growth zone. That’s how they operate in a person’s birth chart.
The nodes are also part of the current transits that affect not only an individual chart, but also the entire world. The Moon’s Nodes have an 18.6-year orbit and therefore remain in a sign for approximately a year and a half.
The North Node explains the qualities society is moving toward and learning how to develop.
The South Node represents familiar patterns, habits and old assumptions that are being outgrown.
When the nodes change signs, it’s like the change of seasons. Social movements, technological advancements and an artistic renaissance often align with new nodal positions.
The Moon’s Nodes are similar to a background noise that everyone hears and feels. They can influence many aspects of life, such as:
- The tide of collective evolution
- Deep currents versus waves of the planets
- Soul-level direction of humanity
The South Node gives us a collective past we’re all shedding.
The North Node gives us a collective future we’re all building.
On July 27, 2026, the nodes are moving from the axis of Virgo/Pisces to Leo/Aquarius, where they will remain until March 26, 2028. Let’s reflect on the last couple of Moon’s Node transits before we look into the future.
The nodes were in Aries/Libra from July 2023 – January 2025. That time was characterized by a focus on gender and reassigning pronouns. Trans people and drag queens were the heroes or villains. Relationships were being refined.
Then the nodes transited through Pisces/Virgo from February 2025 – July 2026. Pisces is the healer, and Virgo is the perfectionist, so it was a time to reassess health and figure out how to remedy old structures. It emphasized purification, mental health, emotional overload and systems breakdown in a chaotic world. It tested our spirituality, causing tension between logic and intuition.
Looking at the future, the Moon’s Nodes enter Leo/Aquarius on July 27th with the South Node moving into Leo and the North Node moving into Aquarius. This drastic shift moves from collectively healing the self to transforming society.
The South Node in Leo screams for the end of influencers, personal branding and the cult of celebrity culture. Vanity, gross excess and unworthy charismatic gurus will be seen as gauche and narcissistic. Expect the fall of authoritarian leaders and a lessening emphasis on centralized power and hierarchy. A much better use of Leo’s energy will be expressive, dramatic and unapologetically authentic creative ventures.
The North Node in Aquarius brings nothing less than a renaissance in technology. We are seeing the very beginning of AI, virtual reality, automation and online communities as a substitute for local clubs. Aquarius personifies the collective. Groups, organizations and underground societies will flourish. Aquarius is fiercely independent.
This new axis will fight to reclaim the heaviness of the Virgo/Pisces era by infusing joy, creativity, passion, new leadership and renewed positivity into the world. People will be very outspoken with their convictions. There is nothing shy about either Leo or Aquarius. They are the leaders and the rebels of the zodiac.
Collective evolution will move humanity to incredible innovation. Friendship networks will create change with everyday people becoming the leaders. It will be an era of community over ego. Leo brings the creative fire and the courage to dream boldly. Aquarius offers the infrastructure, the networks, the ideals and the vision of the future.
In summary, I find it fascinating that the nodes are moving from water and earth to fire and air. Water and earth equals mud. Fire and air equals hot air rising. This change mimics the outer planets that have all recently moved from water and earth to fire and air. So, we have indeed entered a new era of hot air. The question is, how will we use it?
